Q – Having visited Hilton Head Island several times in the past on vacation, my wife and I are ready to purchase our retirement home in the area. Because we always drive to Hilton Head, we were wondering where the closest airport is located for commercial flights? Our children and grandchildren will be flying in from time to time and it’s important they have convenient access to air travel.

A – Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) is located off Beach City Road at mile marker #5. Delta Air Lines and US-AIR serves the Hilton Head Island Airport. Delta’s commuter service (Southeast Airlines) offers 4 daily flights to and from Atlanta’s Hartsville-Jackson International Airport (ATL). Southeast currently uses AT7 aircraft for these flights and flight duration is just over an hour. US-AIR offers service via their hub in Charlotte, NC (CLT). US-AIR currently offers service using Dash-8 turboprops and flight time is about 1 hour.

Less convenient and located 45 miles south of Hilton Head Island is the Savannah-Hilton Head Airport. It is home to full-size commercial jet service provided Delta, United, Northwest, Continental and US-AIR.

Q – I have been doing some research and our family would like to move to South Carolina to live on the coast. Our youngest son is entering his senior year of high school and I’m a bit concerned about the quality of education in South Carolina. What information can you provide that will alleviate my fears on the quality of his education?

A – Moving with a son in his last year of high school has it’s own set if unique challenges. Here is the good news; the Hilton Head Island High School was recently ranked #587 out of 28,000 schools in the United States by Parade magazine. Combining superior academics with an outstanding athletic program helps produce a well-rounded student prepared for the next stage of their education. Plus, this area offers your family so many great amenities, including superior parks with exceptional recreational opportunities like bike trails. When you include the area’s outstanding championship golf courses, and superior tennis facilities, it just doesn’t get much better than this. Add to that the wonderful beaches, and the Intercoastal waterway (water sports!), its clear why Hilton Head Island is so appealing.

Important note: Hilton Head Island has no condo towers filled with the typical seasonal tourists making summer life a challenge. Granted, Hilton Head has its share of seasonal visitors, however the total 365-day quality of life is stellar!
